What is Grants.gov?

Grants.gov is the official US federal government database of all grant opportunities. Maintained by HHS, it lists programs from every federal agency — USDA, DOE, NIH, NSF, SBA, EDA, and more. All grants listed are free money that does not require repayment.

Who can apply for federal grants?

Eligibility varies by program. Most federal grants are available to: small businesses (especially SBIR/STTR), nonprofits and NGOs, state and local governments, universities and research institutions, and tribal organizations. Some programs have specific criteria like rural location, minority ownership, or veteran status.

How much funding is available?

The federal government distributes over $900 billion in grants annually. Awards range from a few thousand dollars (community programs) to over $10 million (infrastructure and research). SBIR Phase I awards are typically $150K–$275K; Phase II awards are up to $1.75M.
